To be fair, I actually haven't seen the council actually do anything that would fall under the category of draconian overseeing and speaking for everyone thus far; it's mostly there to help with inter-guild projects or conflicts and moderate the forum (which, much like ARP in the few months before launch, is exploding with new member activity and needs the oversight).

Full disclosure: I am a member of that council, as of about 24 hours ago. (Legio's over there as Oschon at-Ta'ih, heh.) Every guild with 3 active members or more gets two seats on the council to allocate as they wish, so it's not a particularly high barrier to entry here to keep people out.

Still might not be to everyone's taste and your mileage may vary, but no community appeals to everyone. It is, however, the only big/organized FF XIV group I found when I was looking a couple weeks ago. If there is another one and I missed it please post me a link; I'd love to go say hi and introduce myself and the guild.

I'm sure it's great for the folks that want to be in on it!

But my hackles went up right away at the line "we represent the entire RP community". That's just how I am.

I'll preface by saying I never played FF11 in it's heyday but on a whim I picked up the digital download from Gamestop a month ago just to 'give it a go.' I logged in a few times but it never really grabbed me, that being said I'd hardly say a game that's been running for almost 8 years across 3 separate platforms (PS2, PC, 360) is a "flop" in any sense of the word.

I logged onto one of the FF11 servers over the weekend and there was over 3,000 people playing the game on that particular server at that time. I don't think Lumiel had that kind of concurrency last month before the server mergers, I don't think we have that much concurrency now after server transfers.

That being said, I'll freely admit FF11 and I'm sure FF14 will not have the type of playstyle that will appeal to the "EQ-set". And that's ok.

I've never played the game either and I have no real desire to (hence my disinterest in Final Fantasy 14). But when I said "flop," I meant that they thought it was terrible - the game itself has been moderately successful - and that they stopped playing within the first month of playing. I always thought that the graphics were more or less amazing, but that's what Final Fantasy is all about: graphics, graphics, graphics... and where has the storyline gone from their games?

To further derail this thread a little bit more, I bought a PS3 for the sole purpose of playing Final Fantasy 13. This was back in April. I defeated the Shiva sisters and... well, my PS3 has been collecting dust (aside from playing Buffy the Vampire Slayer) for the past three months.

Although statistics will prove my opinion to be of the minority, I have very little faith in Final Fantasy these days.

I think the reason that FF 11 might not have had much success in retaining people is that it was terribly unfriendly to solo play, and doubly unfriendly to new players who came along years after launch, as finding people willing to work with you became a near-impossibility.

FF 14 was supposedly created with viable solo play in mind, but we shall have to see if that's actually true.

Does anyone know if they'll be releasing a demo for it?

that's always a turn off. :/
i made quite a few highbie friends that were very helpful, but they were in my linkshell an it was ridiculous indeed finding the groups needed. we few make the group then run for like... 15 minutes before they were like "uhhhh i gotta go" ;3;

Christ... I haven't been here in a while XD

Anywho, just infiltrating this topic to clarify something that possibly isn't clear...

The FFXIV RPC was created because of the fact that RP in FFXI was very spread out and very difficult to find. The people who RP'd in FFXI that are going to move to FFXIV decided that this time we wanted to gather RPers together in very much the same way this board has/did with Aion, we could designate an unofficial RP server (because I doubt SE is going to give us an official one) and basically have more of a robust RP community on said server.

As far as I am aware no one is of the belief that we will be the sole place in Final Fantasy XIV to find RP, and that you wont be able to do it unless you join us, or even that we represent everyone. All I believe we represent is the desire for a group of the people that will want to roleplay there to be gathered together as a community. We really are just trying to make sure people do not have the same problems trying to find a place to role-play as was the case for many roleplayers in FFXI

Eh, long time no see...
Anyway, I'm sort of having a hard time understanding why people keep saying "I didn't like FFXI, so I won't be playing FFXIV". I didn't play FFXI either, but it's 8 years old. I'm sure they've changed a LOT since back then, so that the games can't really be compared like that. If they were going to release an exact copy, there wouldn't really be a reason to release it at all, now would there? ;)

And for the "sole FFXIV roleplay community side" or whatever... I think people might be taking things a tad too serious. I remember the exact same problem popping up back at Aion's launch, and I never really got why people felt so insulted by a forum gathering most of the roleplayers. To me, it's a great idea, and I couldn't care less if they say that they're the main place for roleplayers to come... As long as people COME.

Some people just gotta be 'non-conformist'...just like everyone else.

Nice to hear from you again too, btw ;D

I don't know why people are using FF11 as a measure of FF14 either. Considering NO TWO GAMES IN THE FRANCHISE HAVE 'THE SAME' MECHANICS. But you know what they say, haters gon' hate.

It's "not that serious", sure.

But someone out there felt it was important enough to change the wording on the main page of the site. :P
